Tiičswina, We Survived! was raised on March 29, 2013 for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission commemoration celebration. This č̓iinuł (totem pole) remembers all the children who survived and those who were lost in the Indian Residential School system.
Organized by Nora Martin, it was carved by Tla-o-qui-aht master carver Joe Martin, who also organized the crests. The topmost sun crest was carved by Tla-o-qui-aht master carver Joe David, who also carved the č̓iinuł in Anchor Park featured in the Downtown Art Walk. Tiičswina, We Survived! was a community effort with many Tla-o-qui-aht carvers contributing.
Tin Wis was a Tla-o-qui-aht ancestral village, one of many throughout their traditional territory. Once a č̓iinuł would have stood on this site next to a cedar longhouse. Using semasiographic (icon- or glyph-based) writing, it was encoded with the Tla-o-qui-aht constitution. Today, Tin Wis Resort is owned and operated by the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation.
From 1971-1981, Tin Wis was the site of Christie Indian Residential School (Tofino) after the Indian Residential School on Meares Island closed down. This location was the last Indian Residential School to close in BC, though not the last in Canada (Saskatchewan, 1996).
Truth & Reconciliation Commission Commemoration
March 29, 2013
In honour of Ahousaht, Christie, Kamloops, Mission & Port Alberni Indian Residential School Students & Their Families
Government Indian Agents, RCMP, Social Workers, Religious Orders forcibly removed children as young as 2 from their mothers and fathers and placed them in Indian Residential Schools for up to 15 years. While in the confines of the schools children suffered horrendous atrocities.
Many were innocent victims of sexual, psychological, mental, spiritual and physical abuse.
Most, if not all, faced child labor, loss of culture, loss of language, loss of identity & lack of education.
Many children’s lives were lost due to suicide, murder & neglect while in those schools.
Today we welcome all these children home. We are grateful to you that under great threat and intimidation, you carried as much language and culture as you did from the past to today.

Christen Dokk Smith is a classically trained carver, living in Tofino, BC. His exquisite carving and sculpture is a culmination of old world craftmanship, west coast design, and contemporary innovation.
Hailing from Norway, Christen trained under master woodcarver Bjarte Aarset at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. During his four-year apprenticeship, Christen trained in the classical European way of carving, focusing on Viking, Medieval, Baroque, and Rococo carving. During this time he also learned the art of historical restoration and was commissioned to make many high-precision replicas for museums, churches, and other historical buildings.
In 2012 Christen relocated to the Vancouver Island, and made his home in Tofino, where he has been inspired by the indigenous carving traditions of the Tla-o-qui-aht.
Christen currently carves from Henry Nolla’s iconic Carving shed on North Chesterman beach near The Wickaninnish Inn.

The mission
Clayoquot Action is a Tofino-based conservation organization committed to protecting the biocultural diversity of Clayoquot Sound. Our goals are accomplished through public education, citizen research and monitoring, and advocacy. Clayoquot Action stands for democratic rights, indigenous rights and the rights of Mother Earth.
The vision
The Clayoquot Action vision is simple: to keep Clayoquot Sound clean and green for future generations, to preserve the diversity and integrity of the ecosystems, and to maintain and develop community and cultural richness.
The challenges facing the planet are interconnected—from the climate crisis and the extinction wave, to global market failure. Although these challenges are global by nature, the best place to bring about change is locally, at the community level.
It’s time to create a new story about the role that humans play on Earth, a story that shifts societal values from getting bigger to getting better, and promotes community and cooperation above competitive individualism. Humans must exercise our qualities of high intelligence, forward planning and moral judgment to create a cooperative and sustainable future for all.

We strive to assist people on their path through reading, selecting books that will answer questions, relate to what is happening or has just happened in someone’s life, or, to open new vistas, pose questions and lead onward to new outlooks.
Remember: reading is risky, because books can change opinions, shake up attitudes or give a person a whole new outlook on life.

ARTIST: Mark Hobson
MATERIAL: Original oils and watercolours, giclée prints
I feel like I’m one of a very few, very lucky artists in this planet. I actually have a staff and a gallery.—Mark Hobson
This artist-run gallery showcases the work of Mark Hobson, including original oils and watercolours, as well as giclée prints. Other local artists’ work is also featured including that of Deanna Lankin and “Feather George” Yearsley.
Hobson’s art reflects his love of the Pacific Northwest Coast and draws on his science background to create hyperreal depictions of its environs and species— capturing its unique light, magic and mystery. From wolves wandering the mudflats of Clayoquot Sound to lush undersea scapes to grizzlies in the Great Bear Rainforest, Hobson’s work inspires an awe for this world. As a viewer, you are quickly swept up as If witnessing these ephemeral scenes firsthand.
A recipient of the Artists for Conservation Simon Combes Conservation Artist Award, Hobson’s art and activism to protect the coast have been closely intertwined. This has included successful campaigns collaborating with other artists, such as: Art for the Oil-free Coast in 2012 with 50 artists painting in plein air in the Kynoch Inlet in the Great Bear Rainforest, followed by a book and touring art exhibition, and an earlier initiative in 1989, working with 100 artists to protect old-growth forest in Vancouver Island’s Carmanah Valley.
